Twitter iPhone App Part 5

5/12/2009 2:00:00 PM

It's been a long time since my last update on the Twitter iPhone App that I have been writing. I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the development so far.

The app has reached a feature set and stability that can be used for commercial work. The basic features that the app contains are:
  • Friends timeline viewing and replying as a public or private tweet.
  • Built-in web browsing support.
  • The ability to save draft tweets and then return later to finish writing them.
  • @Mentions screen.
  • Direct message screen.
  • Improved load speeds (up to 3 sec.) for the content pages.

The app has been built and ready for submission for the past week, but I have been holding off until I had a chance to go over more of the iPhone Human Interface Guideline. The last thing that I want to have happen is getting stuck with a button that should not have been used in a manner that it was designed for.

As Twitter continues to grow an evolve I have tried to clear the user interface up so that it provides the best interface for the user. A clean and logically laid out interface that does not provide too many paths that confuse the user. Some of the apps that I have seen did not fully take advantage of the iPhone. I tried to fix that and will be open to suggestions on the future versions.

When replying to a message, if there is a link it is automatically created for viewing inside the built in web browser:

In keeping with the Human Interface Guidelines, we change the layout of the action sheet to represent the lack of a link choice:
