It isn’t a secret that Google’s Nexus One sales have been slow and in some cases a failure. The Nexus One sales when compared to the iPhone and the Motorola Droid have been lacking in numerous areas, and have also been an indicator that the Google will have to change and change quickly if they hope to have any chance to catching up to their reivals.
One way that Google is trying to change is by offering the Nexus One on the AT&T network. This network uses slightly different GSM frequencies from that of T-Mobile, limiting users of unlocked Nexus One devices to the slower EDGE band. Google has moved to rectify the problem by now offering a version of the Nexus One that will take full advantage of AT&T’s 3G network.
The impact of the offering on sales may give Google a slight temporary increase in the total number of phones sold, but only for a short period of time. The main reason that the addition of the new AT&T 3G compatible phone will only see a temporary bump is that user’s are already becoming aware of the newer devices planned by other manufactures of Android phones.
If Google has wanted to, they should have delayed the launch of the Nexus One until the phone could be offered in various flavors to meet the demands of an many users as possible. The launch of the Nexus One in only one variant lost out on the massive publicity buzz that the original Nexus One provided. Now Google will have to hope those people that originally wanted the phone will still be willing to purchase an unlocked Nexus One that can run on one of America’s largest wireless network.
