There has been quite a bit of talks about how many iPads were ordered on April 3rd. The estimates range from 40,000 to as many as 90,000. I think the actual number of pre-orders may be closer to the 90,000 estimate. The reasoning behind that is simple and I will explain.
There are over 100,000 registered Apple iPhone developers, and out of that at least 50,000 are actively developing for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It would stand to reason that out of those 50,000 developers at least half, about 25,000 would be willing to purchase an iPad for development. The remainder of the estimate would come from end user's who are looking for a device that would replace a netbook or supplement a laptop.
